Early Years - Curriculum

ChildrenThe early years of education are critical to the degree of success that learners will experience throughout their schooling.

At St George College our recently redeveloped Junior Primary School Campus provides facilities that have been purpose built and specifically designed to deliver a curriculum that is appropriate to meet the needs of individual young learners.

These facilities together with numerically small classes and staff that have been carefully selected for their knowledge, skills and understandings about teaching and learning in the early years provide the most conducive, supportive and inclusive environment for young learners to reach their full potential.

The state-of-the-art facilities, our experienced and dedicated Junior School staff that work to develop a caring environment help to nurture the individual child and his/her self-confidence.

The Solomos Team emphasises a child centred approach to learning. The focus is on developing sound foundations in literacy and numeracy and security - that is the provision of a safe and inviting learning environment that on one hand helps ignite the natural genius of students and on the other immerses students in words - words in English, words Modern Greek and to a lesser extent words in Italian.

ChildrenAt Reception strong emphasis is placed on explicit teaching of language formalities, the application of reading and writing and the encouragement to take risks in creating oral or written texts.

Learning is structured to be experiential, tangible and involves assimilation of concepts through play activities.

At this level, learners study subjects from all eight learning areas, in a highly integrated learning programme, including English, Mathematics, Science, the Arts and Society and Environment.

In addition our special emphasis on Languages sees learners engaging with the teaching and learning of Modern Greek for at least 200 minutes per week. This time commitment together with groupings that acknowledge and take cognisance of students’ prior learning, ensures that the learning outcomes of our students are well above any standards/benchmarks that may be stipulated by any state and national curriculum. In addition to the teaching and learning of Modern Greek our students also learn Italian.
Our brand new Pascal Information Technology Centre allows our students to acquire the skills and confidence to successfully learn about an ever expanding and evolving technology that will be so important to their future.

The Odysseas Elytis Resource Centre and the Phidias Art Centre further enrich the curriculum of our learners during their early years of education.

The larger than normal air conditioned classrooms and the group activities learning areas complete the requirements for an individualised curriculum delivery.
