Middle - Curriculum
The middle years of schooling encompass the developmental stages of adolescence, within the age range of 10-15 years and Years 6-9. The quality of this phase of schooling is of crucial importance to the future lives and prospects of our students.
Middle schooling at St. George College is founded on a commitment to advance the learning capacity of all students and to achieve learning outcomes that are both pertinent and meaningful.
It is our strong belief that the social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs of young adolescents should inform the structure and educational program of middle schooling.
The Middle Schooling at St George College provides a number of benefits. For example, the group size allows those who work within it to know each other well, and it provides a range of peers for the students to work with and alongside.
The learning community is a place which includes each member in significant ways in its running, where behaviour management is based on negotiation between people who know each other well and which caters for the personal, social and academic development of the student. It also caters for differences within a broad grouping of students. We focus on strategies that recognise and value the unique development phase of the students in our care. Above all, the learning community forms the basis for a flexible school structure that is responsive to changing demands on curriculum and schools.
The curriculum programs offered in the middle years at St. George College form the basis of a holistic approach to curriculum delivery. This curriculum emphasises the successful acquisition of broad general knowledge, skills and attitudes, in a process that is relevant, accessible and flexible.
Students are encouraged to engage in a wide range of texts, materials, technologies and learning experiences. The extensive Information Technology access, and the well-equipped Performing Arts and Sports Centre exemplify the outstanding facilities that support such experiences.
An extensive co-curricular program is designed for students in the Middle School to undertake extra study in various fields that particularly interest them. Options from the areas of Art, Hospitality, Sport, Information Technology, Drama, Music and Italian compliments the curriculum offered in each of the eight learning areas.
Fittingly, our motto at St. George College is “Forever Excelling”. Our commitment to this cause requires a mixed blend of cognitive, physical, spiritual and emotional development.
Our experienced and dedicated Middle School staff, coupled with a relevant curriculum and high expectations, ensures our students have the skills, knowledge and understandings that will assist them in continuing to excel in the Senior Years of education and beyond.
