Primary - Curriculum

ChildrenThe Primary Years of Education represent a crucial developmental stage in the life of students. It is the developmental stage when they begin to deepen their understanding and sense of self through increased knowledge of the interconnectedness of the world of which they are part.

The Primary Years of Education are years of growing social independence and increased responsibility for one’s own behaviour.

At St George College explicit teaching for the acquisition of skills, knowledge and understandings about social collaboration is viewed as an important precondition to effective intellectual, social and spiritual development and as a valued component of an integrated teaching and learning program.

The development of independent learners within a safe, supportive and inclusive teaching and learning environment that fosters exploration of new ideas, risk taking and respect for the rights of all learners is an important focus of teachers in the Thiele Learning Team.

An additional focus of action for the Thiele Learning Team is to further develop and extend literacy and numeracy skills, as well as knowledge and understandings for all learners and to develop in students a love for Literature and the Arts.
Learners in the Thiele Learning Team experience a curriculum across all eight learning areas and student learning is reinforced by relating it to real world situations and meanings.

The integration and application of critical literacy skills to themes across the learning areas of Science, Society and Environment and Health and Physical Education are seen as critical in developing in learners balanced perspectives and views on social and environmental issues.
